Fit & Limo are more or less the germ cell of the whole Limo-musicworld. In the late 70ies the couple play a kind of woods and fields folk and then taking the means of production in their own hands inspired by the Punk, New Wave and the so-called ingenious amateurism. They found a cassette-label (Servil) and invent new bands every new day! (Pure Luege, Kannibalen & Missionare, Hans Kahl Combo….). In spring 1982 Fit & Limo release their 1st tape on Servil: “Haende Hoch”. Their casio-pop and folk-punk is well-received by the mags of those days (Spex: “little stories, playful naïve children tunes, refreshing results, pleasant”). Further tapes follow: “Kleine Schiffchen” (1982), “Rote Blumen” (1983), “Golden Trash” (1984) and then “Put On The Flipside” (1985) which is the origin of the early repertoire of the Shiny Gnomes with its mixture of Garage punk. The label Pastell listens to “Put On The Flipside” and wants to produce Fit & Limo. But the Shiny Gnomes go in to the studio instead and record the classic “Wild Spells”. From 1986 til 1988 Fit & Limo retire to return with their first longplayer “Retrospective 1983-1988”. With the help of the drummers Ufo and Haffi it has a more Rock-direction which continues with the albums “Revisited” and “That Totally Tore My Head Off”. In 1993 they release their groundbreaking “Angel Gopher” album which is pure folk with heavy psychedelic touches. The drums are out and the bongos in. Their tribute to the Incredible String Band “This Moment. Fit & Limo Play Incredible String Band” fulfills this new direction. “Autre Monde” (on their double cd-set “Folly Is An Endless Maze”, 1995), “The Serpent Unrolled” (1998), “As Above So Below” (2000) and finally “Ginnistan” with more and more cosmic folk touches bring Fit & Limo best reputation in the international indie-folk scene. Their forthcoming album “Terra Incognita” will be out in late 2004 and has new surprises. With their supporting guests (Bernhard Witthüser of the Krautfolk-legend Witthüser & Westrupp, Jeffrey Alexander and Miriam Goldberg also known as Black Forest Black Sea, Timothy Renner who collaborated with Fit & Limo on a split-single and Steffi & Peter Wolf (pals of Fit & Limo) and their cosmic art-folk influences marks a new step in the Fit & Limo catalog.

Wunderschöne, acidtriefende Kompositionen wechseln sich mit schön zackigen Beat-Rhythmen ab (The Fear Of The World lässt mich tanzen).

I took the LSD and that...totally tore my head off!

Yes, our whacky German duo summon up a most exotic picnic-hamper full of instrumentation and their finger-in-the-ear folkiest unison vocals and unleash what Robyn Hitchcock dare not - an EP´s worth of Incredible String Band covers. That´s the first reaction an unprepared listener would have when listening to this album. Fit and Limo are a German folk duo, made up of Limo (central member of the German psych band Shiny Gnomes) and his lady companion Fit. They were already responsible for a few releases, among which the quite wonderful four track 7´´ EP This Moment - Fit&Limo Play Incredible String Band, right now the best played item on our cosmic jukebox. Fit&Limo have a unique sound in these hard, rational and digital times. Together they master a fair score of instruments like flute, melodica, autoharp, tin whistle, Glockenspiel, organ, guitar, sitar, tabla, and an even longer list of very strange and exotic instruments. Their songs are short but beautiful pieces of semi-acoustic psychedelic folk rock in the purest Incredible String Band/Witthüser&Westrupp/Tyrannosaurus Rex tradition. Here and there, the resemblance is so striking that in an unguarded moment, you might actually Think you´re listening to The 5000 Spirits Or The Layers Of The Onion or The Hangman´s Beautiful Daughter. Fit&Limo´s musical palette is a subtle and gentle mixture of Celtic folk, Middle Eastern melodies and Oriental atmospheres, all played with loving care and a real human-down-to-earth feeling, a sensation I only experience when listening to the Oroonies these last few years. This is a very psychedelic album, not only because of its exotic instrumentation and use of distorted vocals, but mainly because of its fairytale-like otherness. The LP is brought out in a handmade sleeve (as a matter of fact, each sleeve is differently ornamented) and on splashed-out coloured vinyl (the record makes it look as though a pot of Bolognese sauce exploded on your turntable. It´s also an instant future collector´s item, since there were only 500 numbered copies made. Angel Gopher is the best psychedelic folk-album of 1993, an instant classic, one to assemble your friends for on a pow-wow round de´ole water pipe. Mega recommended!” (Crohinga Well, Belgien) _________

The practitioners of acid-folk tend to draw wiggly lines off into mysterious woods, and I thought I´d follow a few to see where they lead. Fit&Limo are an acoustic duo from Bavaria comprising Stefan Limo Lienemann (previously in the Shiny Gnomes) and his female compatriot, who is known to the world only as Mrs. Fit. Ill-advised monikers aside, The Serpent Unrolled is their first full-length release since Autre Monde in 1995, and it was worth the wait. In fact if you have that previous outing, the serpent is probably already unrolling around your turntable or inside your disc player and your are consequently probably in some far off place and not reading this at all. You always hear folks bemoaning the lack of current music that can stand up in the company of visionary works by The Incredible String Band, Pearls Before Swine, Third Ear Band, COB, Caedmon, Mellow Candle and the like. Fit&Limo create acid folk masterpieces that set the controls for the heart of the genre and end up with it glowing in their hands. The 14 tracks are a riot of pan-psychedelic instrumentation with Fit doing mostly keys and percussion duty (glockenspiel, autoharp, harmonium, metallophone, xylophone, toy piano and many more) and Limo doing the string-driven stuff (guitar, sitar, mandolin and so on). Plenty of swapping around of duties goes on though, with instruments flying between the two like enchanted emissaries. But what matters more than the musicology of it is the extraordinarily beautiful sonic spells that are cast with these tools. Twelve near-perfect originals are delivered, exquisite as the moment when a droplet of water on a leaf decides to fall to earth. You could pick anything, but allow me to direct you to the courtly medieval beauty of Born In The Eleventh Month, or the Byzantine ISB complexity Walking The Labyrinth for supporting evidence of greatness. Based on what they have achieved with their originals, no-one has more right to weigh in with covers of the Grateful Dead´s Dark Star and Tom Rapp´s Images Of April, and the versions here are illuminated with grace, easily matching their excellent cover of Rapp´s Surrealist Waltz on the For The Dead In Space tribute album.” (Ptolemaic Terrascope, UK) _________

By the time I got my copy the deadline is already history but despite the rush I simply couldn´t resist the temptation to write a few words about this fine release. On As Above So Below, our fearless German psychedelic folk guides show off some of their sharpest writing yet and on top of this they have slightly expanded the sound to include a more loose, improvisational kind of free form, mantra-like jamming. Not that they haven´t tread over these territories before but it feels like the extensiveness of these features marks a new and exciting direction for this mysterious duo. The fabulous opener, Owsley Blues ist of a particularly reflective mood, quietly transporting music at its best. Another treasure is to be found in the sitar-driven transcendentalism of The Highest Mountain which must be the same very mountain as Atman/Magic Carpathians have been exploring for such a long time. Fit&Limo approaches the mountain from a more song-based perspective but the result is equally fascinating. The ten minutes long Glockenspiel includes some excellent West Coastian electric psych guitar over layers of quiet exotic instrumentation. There´s a wide range of unusual instruments applied throughout the album´s 60 minutes but they´re never used to show off, rather to add yet another musical quality to the mesmerizing whole. My Sweetheart´s Voice sounds a bit like Stone Breath but perhaps it´s only the banjo that leads me to such comparisons. The softly flowing folkedelia of World In A Grain is another reason for immediate praise. The simple, beautiful melody is arranged with loads of traditional instruments in the most unexpected yet natural way, and the vocal juxtaposition between Fit and Limo is captivatingly brilliant. It´s still early but I´d be surprised if this album isn´t on a certain list in a about a year from now.” (Broken Face, Schweden) _________

They´re still on September Gurls, and they can still be found somewhere in the midst of late-night acid-folk songwriting, but if there ever is a link between the most folky aspects of Fit&Limo and Limo´s more drone oriented work as Discolor, this is surely the ride to take. The first part of this epic journey (CD or double LP) sounds quite familiar though with rich folk/psych compositions, including traditional and exotic folk instruments, playing in rather uncommon time signatures. The further we to into this concept album the more cosmic and droning things tend to get. But even in the most intensely meditative and ambient textures like in the glorious Der Kosmische Pfad, there is something that keeps us right on the foundation of folk music, thus preventing the record from becoming too diverse or loosely knit. Instead this feels like a natural development where the unquestionable center piece, the 21-minute opus Upper And Lower Ginnistan close things on a highly improvisational note. As the track progresses, it moves effortlessly from the spiritual energy of Sun Ra and jazz-inspired emotion to something a whole lot more Krautish. In this very moment they manage to conjure up visions of the heavenly light of folks like Popol Vuh and to a certain extent even Tangerine Dream. If that´s not enough for you guys, I´m just not sure what you´re looking for.”

Another standout track is “The Weaving Song”, penned by Timothy Renner and featuring vocals and banjo by Renner. How often do you get to hear a banjo and sitar in the same song? The banjo and vocals create a traditional feel while the guitar and sitar trip out in space. A beautiful melding of contrasts. And “In Den Gärten Salomos” is the album´s stretched out 9 minute acoustic duo in space, free-improv jamming with the aliens dream sequence track. Wow, I could go on but in short, this is hands down the most seductively, psychedelically captivating albums I´ve heard yet this year. If you enjoy folk-psych of the most cosmic sort, then you will absolutely love this album." (from “Aural Innovations”/Jerry Kranitz) "The consistently impressive German “husband and wife” outfit Fit & Limo is back with what I believe is their tenth full-length release. The band´s trademark psychedelic forest folk, influenced by folk like Incredible String Band, Pearls Before Swine and COB, is still very much present but the ample use of cosmic/Krautish characteristics as well as a bunch of collaborative tracks with other artists easily sets this one apart from any of their previous albums. Regularly Foxy Digitalis readers will be pleased to learn that Provicence ensemble Black Forest/Black Sea as well as Timothy Renner find their way into this album, somehow enabling their way to an even more engaging and mystical sound. While of the tracks with Miriam Goldberg and Jeffrey Alexander (of BF/BS) leans toward the wonderfully soft-spoken and masterfully crafted free folk of Tower Recordings and PG Six, the collaboration with Renner results in haunting, slightly gothic chamber folk. The latter is especially evident in “The Weaving Song”, where Tim´s solemn baritone and banjo playing corresponds beautifully with Fit´s autoharp and Limo´s harmonium, guitar, clay drums, sitar and tablas. But the further we go into this album the more cosmic and droning things tend to get. But even in the most intensly meditative and ambient textures like in the Popol Vuh-inspired synth/harp)mandolin/mellotron/bass/noise piece “In Den Gärten Salomos”, there´s something that keeps us right on the foundation of folk music, thus preventing the album to point in too many directions. I found it pretty difficult to describe this record in words but I know for sure that the exquisite and fragile music of Fit & Limo continues to amaze and “Terra Incognita” only further mystifies the deeply spiritual vista where their music can be found."
